UGANDA CRANES’ RETURN TO AFCON IS SEBASTIEN DESABRE’S BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT

Uganda Cranes beat Cape Verde a goal to nil at the Mandela National Stadium in their fifth fixture of AFCON 2019 qualifiers.

Following numerous wasted scoring chances, Patrick Kaddu at the 77th minute through a well calculated header overcame resilient Cape Verde goalie Thiery Graca to give Ugandans the long awaited goal that ushered the East African side to a unique back to back African Cup of Nations finals.

Coach Desabre who abandoned the comfort of Egypt with an objective of managing a national team so as to boost his coaching CV considers the victory a huge milestone in his coaching career.

During the post-match conference, the former Ismaily FC coach excitedly explained his initial desire to qualify an African side to the AFCON and doing so with Uganda is his biggest achievement.

“…This is the best I have achieved. My plan was to qualify for AFCON in African football…”

Desabre’s side amazingly reached this far without conceding a goal and are left with a fixture away from home.

The five clean sheets for which tactically goalkeepers are credited have been downplayed by Dennis Onyango. The 2016 African player of the year based in Africa accredited the clean sheet to teamwork.

“I didn’t get the clean sheets by myself. We got it together with Ochan, Salim Jamal, and Charles Lukwago, including the outfield players. We want one last clean sheet so that we get to Cameroon with six.”

With the victory, Uganda extends their lead at the top of Group L to 13 points and awaits their final fixture away to Tanzania at Benjamin Mkapa National Stadium on the 22nd March 2019.
