Espanyol 1-0 Real Madrid: An injury time goal secures Espanyol first victory over Real Madrid in 11 years

Espanyol beats Real Madrid for the first time after 22 failed attempts since 2007 through Gerrard Moreno’s injury time winner.

The two sides were destined for a goalless draw and apparently a decision by Zinadine Zidane to rest Cristiano Ronaldo happened to be strategically wrong as it cost the Laliga champions the game.

Espanyol’s forward Garcia fights for the ball with Real Madrid’s defender Nacho

Espanyol striker Mareno whose first goal was apparently wrongfully ruled out at the 30th minute for off side was successful in his pursuit for goal at the 93rd minute when Sergio Garcia’s cross reached him before he smashed it from 5 yards past Keylor Navas when while Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos was upfront seeking for goals.

Meanwhile Gareth Bale became the first British to have played 116 laliga matches for Real Madrid, breaking David Beckham’s 115

The win is the first for Espanyol after losing 19 and drawing 3 times against Real Madrid in their 22 meetings in the past decade.

The lose leaves Zinadine Zidane’s side 14 points behind La Liga table leaders Barcelona who has a match at hand whereas Espanyol climb to 13th place with 31 points in 26 games.
