Conte who has been having sleepless nights over his underrated boys facing Messi and teammates amazingly sent an ear pulling message to Barcelona after threatening to beat the Spanish side in the Champions League round of 16.
Barcelona controlled and definitely enjoyed possession unlike Chelsea who defended for 90 minutes but oddly were more dangerous on goal no wonder Willian gave them the lead at the 62nd minute.
The Brazilian was unlucky as he hit the post twice but a defensive era by 21 year old Andreas Christiansen eventually gifted Barcelona with an away goal through the usual suspect Leo Messi at the 75th minute.
False number Eden Hazard played his role, Messi was excellent on the other side but Willian could have been the hero of the night for Chelsea if not for fate and he expressed sadness.
“I’m happy with the goal but a little bit sad with the result. I think we deserve to win. They had more possession but we had chance to score. We were a bit unlucky. We look forward to the other games.”
Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is proud with his boys because of their diligence in following the game plan that almost worked although disappointed because of the mistake that resulted into the goal.
“I think that we were very close to a perfect game, only one mistake, and when you make a mistake against Barcelona you to pay. It’s a pity because I’m very proud of my players, they followed what we prepared, and it’s a pity. We were a bit unlucky”
Conte will take his boys to Nou Camp for the return leg in weeks to come but former Barcelona player and a graduate of the Barca Academy Francesc Fabregas is ashamed with the results but happy and pleased with how they played.
“Such a shame really. We were very good, went with a game plan and executed it very well. They are one of the best teams in the world but we played so well. Overall fantastic performance, in the end, shame. We should be proud but I think even 1-0, 2-0 would have been fantastic but at the Nou Camp they are very strong. We will have to play another excellent game to go through.”
But the Spain International believes defending for 90 minutes at Nou camp is a suicide.
“90 minutes at the Camp Nou defending is basically a suicide mission.”
Conte will be with the boys on Sunday in another tough Challenge as they face second place Manchester United at old Trafford at 17:05 EST before battling champions elect Manchester City on 4th March and then Crystal Palace on 10th before meeting Barcelona again on 14th March.
Whereas Barcelona will have to play Girona, Las Palmas, Atletico Madrid and Malaga before hosting Conte.
