Giroud’s goal against Crystal Palace on 2017 New Year’s Day was voted FIFA Puskas goal of the year.
The award which was introduced on 20th October 2009 by Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) during the tenure of President Sepp Blatter is purposed to reward the player either male or female considered to have scored the most aesthetically significant in other words most beautiful goal of the year.
Its name Puskas is derived from former Real Madrid striker Ferenc Puskas who played in the 1950s and 60s, scored 84 goals in 85 internationals and considered one of the best strikers Europe has ever seen as the former Hungarian scored 512 goals in 528 games.
But what is more perplexing about Giroud’s goal winning the prestigious Puskas award is breaching of the criteria. As the criteria for awarding states, it should be beautiful goal, awarded without discrimination of gender, sex or race of which the striker passed.
Also one of the criteria states the goal shouldn’t be a result of luck, mistakes, deflection by another player or the player in an offside position, given the fact that in post-match interview Giroud admitted the goal was luck nullified his goal for the award.
“I think it’s my best one, Alexis Sanchez gave me the ball a bit behind and I tried to take it with the backheel and I had a lot of luck. It was just about luck! I was not on good balance. It was a great feeling and I wanted to score from the first minute. I tried to deflect it. In this position, you can do something else, so I was lucky and it’s nice for me and nice for the team.” Said Giroud
Meanwhile it baffles the more and confuses the worst how the Arsenal striker’s scorpion-kick volley would win on a world competition yet lost in the premier league’s goal of the month to Andy Carrol and goal of the season to Emre Can.
Nevertheless votes decided the goal Giroud considered pure lack to be awarded Puskas best goal of the season and the French international was proud of it.
“Very proud and honored to receive this trophy! Thanks again everyone for supporting me!” Wrote the scorpion man on twitter
Speaking during the Ceremony Giroud was delighted and acknowledged the effort of his teammates.
“First of all I have to say it’s an honor for me I’m delighted to receive this trophy in front of legends of football. Now I’d just like to thank the people who voted for me. I would like to congratulate the 10 nominees who scored amazing goals too.” Said the 21-year-old. He noted, “Obviously I would like to thank my teammates, without them I couldn’t score maybe this goal, and my family.”
The event was graced by retired and active football legends such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldo Dalima, Sergio Ramos, Gigi Buffon, Ronaldo, Messi and many others.
