Okwi scored the only goal for Uganda cranes to earn victory after 52 years over Egypt in the 2018 FIFA world cup qualifiers played at the Mandela National stadium this evening.
The Cranes were thought to be an underdog considering the Egyptian English Premier League stars such as Mohammad Elneny and Salah for that reason little was Emmanuel Okwi recognized not until he became a thorn in the Enemies flesh soon after the game started.
Okwi attempted to score earlier on in the first half when his cross from the right wing was punched off by veteran goal keeper Essam El Hadary resulting into the second corner. He later made a direct shot on target when Ochaya gave him his magical left footed cross.
Egypt scored, unfortunately and controversially the linesmen cancelled Mahmoud Kharaba’s goal because of offside. Replay shows the goal that was nicely created by Mo Salah didn’t find Trezeget and Kharaba off side.
After several attempts to score by cranes who showed anxiety to revenge the painful defeat they suffered to the Pharaoh at the beginning of the year in AFCON Gabon, Okwi finally broke the deadlock six minutes after second half started.
Farouk Miya paved the way by making a dreading shot that was punched off to a corner kick, he took a corner that somehow found its way to Okwi who cut from the right wing before blasting the ball into the back of the net to give the home side the lead which eventual became the winning goal.
In summery the cranes unexpectedly outplayed Egypt given the fact that they showed zeal and desire to score more than their visitors by cranes through Miya’s shots and Derrick Nsibambi’s header that were saved by 44 year old El Hadary.
On the other side Dennis Onyango in a couple of occasions saved threatening attempts that gave life to the home team.
Nevertheless Uganda now tops group E table with seven points as Egypt follows second with six points. Both teams will face each other again next week on Tuesday for the return leg at Alexandria Stadium – Alexandria.
Group mates Ghana and Congo Brazzaville who have a point and zero respectively encounter each other tomorrow at Babayara Stadium Kumasi – Ghana.
