Inspite of losing by 2-1 to Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid still qualified for the Champions League finals on aggregate (2-4). First leg did much irreversible harm that two goals for Atletico Madrid by Niguez and Antoine Griezmann in the return leg in the first sixteen minutes had less impact.
Situation worsened when Francisco Suarez scored at the 42nd minute. Kareem Benzema skillfully dodged and dribbled entertainingly three Atletico players to create a shooting space for Kroos, whose shot was saved before Isco finished the rebound.
Kevin Gamerio’s inability to capitalize on two chances faded Atletico’s hopes as the game presented limited chances.
Former Blancos, player and now manager Zinadine Zidane credited the players for the victory, speaking in a post-match interview, this were his own words;
“We are very happy, happy to reach the final again. It is all merited, especially for the players who have worked so far. It’s deserved. We had difficulties at the beginning, we got two goals, but we did not have to worry. We knew we were going to have chances. We knew they would come out strong, with pressure. But after 25 minutes it changed completely. In the second part, we found our game.”
While Gabi Fernandez, the Atletico midfielder was mistaken that they had excellent first half performance in the first half, hence thought something positive could come out nevertheless expressed pride in his fellow teammates.
“The performance was the least we could do. I thought we were excellent in the first half. A moment of genius from Benzema took away from the dream but we never stopped fighting and I’m proud of everyone.” Stated Gabi
